A woman is in critical condition after being shot in the head Wednesday evening.

Police were contacted by Mercy Medical Center after the 34-year-old was brought there at around 7 p.m.

Police say a male witness, thought to be the woman's boyfriend, said the incident happened at a home in the 6200 block of South Union Street.

At this early stage of the investigation, police say the man is considered as a witness and not a suspect. He is being interviewed by Des Moines police.

The woman is in hospital listed in a critical condition.
