A former Ankeny teacher is accused of sexually abusing a former student.

Mandy Davenport is charged with one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee.

Police say the 33-year-old taught at Ankeny High School as a language arts teacher and was later assigned to Centennial High School.

Police say the 17-year-old boy was a student at the time of the alleged offense.

Davenport is currently in the Polk County Jail.

Section 709.15 forbids, amongst other things, sexual contact between a school employee and a “…person who is currently enrolled in or attending a public or nonpublic elementary or secondary school, or who was a student enrolled in or who attended a public or nonpublic elementary or secondary school within thirty days of any violation…” There exist similar laws for those who provide or purport to provide mental health services {§709.15}, officers in charge of offenders and juveniles {§709.16}.

LOL. I bet he was bragging to his friends. Didn’t all of us have a crush on a teacher when we were in school? These aren’t rape cases. And he was 17, not 12 or something.

  • Alex

^What??? A 17 year old is NOT of legal age to consent and this IS a rape case. Do not make light of a rape case. The reason it takes victims so long to report crimes such as these are because of comments like the ones you are making.

    • Janelle

Regardless or not if it was rape, the legal age of consent in Iowa is 16, so try to get your facts straight.

    • livingdeadguy

Explain to me how this was rape. An attractive teacher and a 17 year old b boy? Yeah, I’m sure there was a lot of resistance there. As someone who has personally fantasized about the lovely Ms. Davenport, I can assure you he was into it. There is no rape case here.

      • Justice

Attractive? Seriously? She looks like she could have been on the Addams Family…And I don’t mean cousin Marilyn

      • Scooter

Yes, but he was a student enrolled in the school she was teaching at. Age of consent is over-ruled by a section of the law that forbids if it’s a student-teacher thing.

    • ThinkingOutSideTheBox

Why? Because she is white and cutie? I hope she is treated as if it was a black male/or A male that did this with a 17 yrs old white female girl. She needs to be put away a for a long time.

Be more worried about the so called friend/teacher(Anika)
that turned this over to the school board. She is clearly a jealous, nutcase that doesn’t know the meaning of loyalty.

    • Ahsgrad2013

Who said she turned it in? I was a student of davenport and worked with Anika on things. How do you know she brought things to school board attention

the Iowa legal Age of Consent for sexual contact is 16 years old. There are a total of A total of thirty one states have set their age of consent at 16, the lowest age of consent in any state.

There is a a close in age exemption to the Iowa age of consent for those aged 14 and 15, who may engage in sexual acts with partners less than 4 years older. Additional laws forbid sexual contact with people in certain positions of power, such as a teacher and a student or a patient and a medical professional.

    • Justice

Thank you Mau for your comment. There are definitely different laws for positions of power having sex with younger people. This woman is technically old enough to be his mother. Why do people think this is acceptable for women vs boys but not men vs girls? They should both be held responsible for their actions no matter if they are men or women.

I’m not saying I believe this story because we don’t have all the facts yet. Nor am I saying that I would condone the teachers actions if in fact she did actually have a sexual relationship with the student. However, at what point is society going to wake up and realize that a 17 year old is not a child. I mean heck, we’re willing to try 14 and 15 year olds as adults in the court system. So clearly we are willing to say that mid to late teenagers are capable of thinking and acting as adults. Make them own up to the consequences of their actions and stop giving people an easy way to sue the government for a fat, taxpayer funded check simply because the second person involved is an “authority figure”

  • whoswho

NONE of the FACTS of this case have been released. All you are “hearing” is hear-say at this point. Do not be those kinds of people who judge people on what you ‘hear’ instead of what you ‘know.’ Do you know in the state of Iowa a teacher can be arrested JUST on a complaint being filed? How is that fair? So, I can walk into the board and submit a complaint on ANICA and how unstable, bipolar, and jealous she is and the board should pursue the fact she shouldn’t be teaching students? Something is wrong here. All I am saying is, the system is flawed and an innocent ‘person’ and ‘teacher’ has been SLANDERED in every way, shape and form.

  • La-te-da

Police do not make arrests in a case unless there is solid evidence. Don’t be surprised if more evidence is found.

    • Nikki

yes they do I’ve seen it happen if someone says it happened they will arrest that person without evidence based on the prson saying it happened that is how are justice system works now days its guilty until proven innocent which is wrong because 17 year old boys lie if he didn’t get any from her he problely made it up to get back at her!!!\

  • ...

I’m sorry but what exactly is it that ONICA is jealous of? She’s obviously not that unstable and crazy if she knows better than to have sexual relations with a student. I’m also curious about what she would be gaining by making up accusations up? It doesn’t matter if someone doesn’t seem like the type to do this but there is obviously some evidence against her or she wouldn’t have resigned. so how about we let the actual details of the story come out before we start pointing fingers and bad mouthing people

Sexual Exploitation is a crime in Iowa Code Chapter 709. The chapter is titled “sexual abuse” but Sexual Exploitation is a different crime than sexual abuse. The age of consent does not apply to the crime of Sexual Exploitation. If the “school employee-student” relationship exists, then there can be a crime.

  • Noneofyourbusiness

As a student at ACHS, I am shocked at the issue. I’m even more shocked at the comments with assumptions regarding this issue. To the bratty comments poking fun at the issue, I’m disgusted. If you wish to argue upon this, please get the facts first. Remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

  • Sniper#2bravo

Adult Need to have sex with other adults and not some freaking kid. I don’t care what the age of consent is and if your a teacher there is never a pas for having sex with a student
