Altoona boasts an impressive list of entertainment venues but that list is soon to become longer.

Prairie Meadows Casino, Adventureland and the Bass Pro Shop will be joined by another major venue. Altoona city officials have announced plans to build an open air outlet mall.

Construction on the 325,000 square foot mall will begin next year.

The developer is New England Development out of Massachusetts.

The mall is expected to have 75 vendors which will include stores and restaurants. It will be part of the Prairie Crossing development which is located along Interstate 80.

The city hopes to turn the space into an entertainment district.

“I couldn’t be happier for the development that is coming but hang on because there is more that will come. Nobody wants to be first in these big developments but now we have a first and I hope and believe there will be many that will want to follow,” Mayor Skip Conkling said.

Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse is set to open as part of the development this summer.

That’s not the only major development in the city, crews are also working on a new Facebook data center. The $300-million building is set to open in early 2015.

So I guess Prairie Meadows approves this even tho all of the tourists money will be spent at the mall.

Why do we care if Prairie Meadows approves it? I just hope Barnes & Noble and IKEA can be talked into coming to Altoona. It was ridiculous for B&N to go into Jordan Creek with their big store on University. And IKEA has free delivery within a certain range or you pay and arm and a leg if you’re not local.
