Part of the farm bill passed this year included financial aid toward training and education for new farmers. USDA is making more than $19 million in grants available through the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program to help the next generation of farmers.
U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the average age of a farmer is rising, so there is a need for getting new farmers established.
And USDA estimates between the years 2008 and 2018 there will be an eight percent decrease in farmers.
The grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. The deadline to apply is June 12th.
