It was a heated week at the statehouse as lawmakers try to get to the bottom of confidential settlements offered to former state workers.
Top executives at the Department of Administrative Services said they did not know that at least one fired worker was given additional money to keep their settlement agreement confidential. They also struggled to identify where the money to pay the settlements came from. Democrats said the state could be forced to repay Federal funds if they were used for settments.
Lawmakers were also having difficulty in getting answers about a "Do Not Hire" list made up of former state employees. Former DAS Director Mike Carroll told the Oversight Committee this list did not exist. The department's Deputy Director was also asked about the list again this week and his response provoked name calling amongst lawmakers.
Also discussed during the Oversight Hearings were claims the Branstad administration strong-armed the Public Employee Relations Board into hiring an administrative judge the administration preferred.
Channel 13's Sonya Heitshusen hosts this weeks' edition of The Insiders and her guests include Democrat State Senator and Chairperson of the Oversight Committee Janet Petersen and Danny Carroll, chairman of the Iowa Republican Party.
