State leaders joined together Friday morning to remember Iowans who died while on the job during the past year.

“The 61 Iowans we lost this year were fulfilling their calling, their contributions to our state are appreciated and are celebrated and of course their lives will always be remembered,” Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds said.

The ceremony near the State House was in honor of Workers’ Memorial Day.

Last year the number of Iowans killed with on the job jumped significantly.

In 2013, 61 Iowans were killed -15 more than 2012.

Among those honored today was Rockwell City police officer Jaime Buenting who was shot and killed during a stand-off in September of last year.

Buenting was 37-years-old and left behind a wife and two children.
