WEEKLY WORKOUT: The CrossFit Family

CrossFit 515 in Grimes is all in the family – the Noyce family.

What started out in their garage is now a booming business.

The Noyce family caught the CrossFit bug about four years ago, when a college buddy introduced Bobby Noyce to the fitness phenomenon.  He started Crossfit 515 in the family’s garage and moved into a gym in Grimes about nine months later.

“I basically fell in love with it right away.”

Bobby passed the passion on to his big sister, Jaime.

“It was like, almost instant, ‘where has this been?'”

The middle child, Lindsay was next, “Hooked right away, a lot like Jaime.”

Mom, Shelley Noyce was the final convert.

“Once they started it, they talked about it non-stop and from day one tried to convince me to do it.  I was like, you gotta be kidding.”

Shelley Noyce has always been athletic.  She played tennis competitively and continues to swim a mile a day, but this was different.

“I’d never lifted any kind of weights, never had a barbel in my hand,” Shelley said.  “Every movement was new to me.  It was always a challenge, but I think you see prgress because you’ve never done it before.”

Shelley progressed all right.  She qualified for the Crossfit Games three years in a row.  In 2011, at the age of 55, she won her division.

The Noyce kids compete too – individually and as a team.  Last year, the Noyce clan was among 50-teams from around the world to compete in California.

That’s two generations of Crossfit elite and a third in the making.

“I’m 25-weeks pregnant,” Lindsay tell us after finishing a round of Olympic lifts.  “I think the kids just grow up with it, and they want to do it so it’s a good thing to have kids excited about being active.”

All of this makes Mom very proud.

“It’s touching,” said Shelley holding back tears. “They push me a lot. So, it’s kind of that reverse role as a parent.”

The roles may be shifting, but Shelley still leads by example, as this Crossfit family builds a bond stronger than steel.

“My family is very close,” explained Bobby.  “Crossfit has definitely brought us closer together.
