CLIMATE CHANGE: DM Mayor To Host White House Task Force
The Des Moines mayor plans to help President Obama in the next month on a global issue.
Mayor Frank Cownie says a White House task force will be here in May. The group will focus on ways to better prepare the US for climate change.
The mayor made made the announcement Wednesday morning during a climate change forum at Des Moines University.
Cownie was named a member of the task force last November.
President Obama created the group in the hope of helping states and cities deal with extreme weather events like flooding and droughts.
The group is made up of mayors, governors and tribal leaders.
“My point of view as a mayor when you think about the things we have to face in our own infrastructure, that’s climates related, certainly floods are one of them. We have to prepare for that,” Mayor Cownie said.
During today’s forum several business owners discussed changes they are making to better prepare for what might come in the future.
