VETERANS HOME: First Phase Of $35m Remodel Complete

The Iowa Veterans Home has a goal of getting every resident their own room and it has taken one big step towards that this week.

More than 600 veterans and spouses of veterans live on the Marshalltown campus.

Officials celebrated Friday the completion of the first phase in a $35-million renovation project.

So far workers have remodeled Malloy`s north tower providing nearly 60 private rooms and suites for 30 couples.

Before the upgrade, residents used a room divider to share a small room. The new private rooms are larger and have their own bathroom and shower.

Officials hope to complete work on the south side of the Malloy Tower by 2015. The final phase involves renovating the Deck Building which will house nearly 90 beds by 2016.

Officials say this project is all about providing residents with the privacy they deserve.

“Well this is our residents’ home and we want it to feel like home and the privacy really contributes to giving it that homelike feeling,” Commandant Jodi Tymeson said.

More than 60-percent of the project is paid for using federal funds. The remaining is state money.
