The annual YESS Duck Derby raised nearly $300,000 to help central Iowa youth.

Around 38,000 ducks raced to the finish line in the pond at Jordan Creek Mall on Saturday.

The owners of the winning duck, Dan and Peggy Miller of Kansas City, took home a grand prize of $10,000.

“The Duck Derby is such an important event for YESS. It’s a community celebration of the life-changing work we are doing at the shelter as well as an important call to action about the needs of youth in Des Moines and the surrounding Metro,” YESS CEO Stephen Quirk said.

All the money raised goes to Youth Emergency Services and Shelter’s operating fund.
