Firefighters rescued five dogs in Marshalltown Tuesday night when a home’s detached garage went up in flames.

Crews responded to a home near Fourth and Linn streets around 8:15 p.m.

Two homes near the garage were also damaged.

Fire fighters went into one of those homes to rescue five dogs as smoke went into the building.

The dogs’ owner says he found out about it when he was taking care of his daughter who has cancer.

“The house started on fire and we were with her in her home care. Did not know about it until we were informed with a phone call saying the dogs were rescued and my house was on fire,” Robert Collins said.

The dogs are staying at the Animal Rescue League today.

No one was injured in the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
