A metro bridge is open ahead of schedule after it was closed for repairs in March.
The Mile Long Bridge across Saylorville Lake was closed March 31st by the Iowa Department of Transportation for repairs. Originally, officials expected the bridge to be closed until Memorial Day weekend but Thursday morning the DOT opened the bridge at 8:00 a.m.
DOT officials credit the construction crew and good weather for finishing ahead of schedule. As a reward for finishing early, the crew will get a $25,000 bonus in addition to the nearly $300,000 price tag for construction.
That means drivers will no longer have to take the 20 minute detour to get to the other side of the lake.
The DOT says nearly 8,000 vehicles drive the bridge over Saylorville Lake every day.
