An Iowan died in a crash Wednesday morning near Williamsburg, Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says 48-year-old Michael Mcauliffe of Urbandale was driving south on I-35 when he crossed the median and went into a ditch. He got stuck in a field and couldn’t get out of the car. The car caught on fire.

Witnesses tried to help Mcauliffe and they flagged down a passing Homeland Security vehicle.

A Homeland Security officer tried shooting out the car window to free Mcauliffe but couldn’t get him out in time.

The officer was treated for smoke inhalation after his attempts to save Mcauliffe.

The investigation into the crash continues and the Kansas Highway Patrol says they will wait for autopsy results to see if Mcauliffe had a medical issue or was impaired.
