Friday is National Public Gardens Day and central Iowa public gardens are hoping you’ll take the time to visit and enjoy what they have to offer.

There is free admission all day and free seedlings for the first 100 visitors at Reiman Gardens in Ames. The Brenton Arboretum in Dallas Center, the Botanical Center in Des Moines, the Better Homes and Gardens Test Garden in Des Moines, and the Iowa Arboretum in Madrid are all open to visitors Friday.

For those gardens that charge admission, you can download a free admission coupon at

National Public Gardens is a day encouraging people to explore local green spaces and raises awareness of the important role of public gardens. It is always the Friday before Mother’s Day.
