Des Moines Area Committee College and the Des Moines Fire Department are teaming up to offer a paramedic course for new fire fighters.

Seven recruits are taking the course at the fire department`s training center.

Starting in 2003, paramedic courses became a requirement for all new recruits. In the past, the department sent its firefighters to Mercy Medical Center for training.

Officials say this new course at the fire department will help employees get more comfortable with the equipment, people, and the day-to-day functions of the job faster.

This 16-week accelerated program will cost the department $57,000.
