A partnership between Des Moines Area Community College and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines will bring a new recreation center to the college’s Ankeny campus.

The project is estimated to cost $23 million and will include renovations to two current DMACC buildings to add a food court, book store, student, activity space, classrooms and study areas.

“We need a bigger, more modern facility to meet the growing needs of Ankeny,” says Vernon Delpesce, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “We envision this state-of-the-art health and wellness center to serve many audiences. It will be a showcase facility.”

DMACC’s Board of Directors approved the project Monday night and the YMCA’s Board of Directors are expected to consider the project later this summer.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2015 and could take up to 24 months to complete.

The facility will be available for use by DMACC students and staff members.

Des Moines-based RDG Planning & Design has been chosen as the architect for the project.

Ok….so, is ANKENY getting a new YMCA, or is DMACC getting a new YMCA. The article says DMACC students and staff can use the facility,

I would guess it would be open to Y members and then to all DMACC students and faculty (they wouldn’t need a membership), but that’s just a guess.
