Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is facing an audit over paying an aide not to work.
In 2012, Schultz allowed then chief deputy Jim Gibbons to remain on the payroll for seven month despite eliminating his position.
During that time Gibbons was paid more than $73,000.
Schultz says Gibbons was allowed to work at home for a month and then served as a resource for the secretary of state’s office. Schultz is yet to say what work Gibbons was involved with during that time.
The state auditor’s office confirmed Wednesday that an audit will take place.
