A Des Moines hospital is laying off 29 employees.
Mercy Medical Center made the announcement Thursday afternoon.
Officials say the cuts are coming from multiple departments that are not directly related to patient care.
Mercy is also modifying manager pay, reducing pay for directorship, reducing hours from certain jobs and not filling some empty positions.
The cuts are part of the medical center’s effort to cut $38-million.
“As the federal government and state payments system continue to ratchet down what they pay us and costs go up, we have to look for opportunities to create cost efficiencies,” explained hospital president Bob Ritz.
“One way you do that is to reduce your management costs. And so if we have a department that has a director, a manager and two supervisors for say 75 staff we may remove one of those positions to reduce what we call the layers of management.”
Employees that are cut are being told to reapply for one of the 300 open positions within the company.
