Ames first graders are finding reading is fashionable.

“I read Balto the Hero…it was a movie that we watched, and I forgot I had it in my book baggie, for a long, long, long, long time,” says first grader Tristan Day.

Tristan did finally read Balto the Hero and because of it, he was in a reading fashion show at Meeker Elementary in Ames.

Kids write about the book they read, then the narrator reads some of the kids’ observations on the book. During the narration, the first graders model the book cover.

The whole project was started in 2007 but not by a teacher.

It was put together by Elaine Kushkowski, a student.

“I was actually a 6th grader in Ames Middle School…and I was working on my Girl Scout Bronze Award project. And I decided to work in Mrs. Helgesen’s first grade classroom. So I went every Wednesday morning and read with the kids, so to finish up the year I decided to have a book fashion show,” says Kushkowsi.

Elaine is now a senior. She has already worked with two Ames 6th grade students who will take over the reading program she started.
