Two people are in the Marshall County Jail after they fled from police Sunday night in Marshalltown and crashed their vehicle.

Police say an officer tried to stop a car on a traffic violation that had just pulled into a driveway in the 500 block of North Center Street. When the officer got out of his squad car, the vehicle backed up, nearly hitting the squad car and took off at a high rate of speed.

The officer did not pursue the vehicle due to the reckless actions of the driver.

About five minutes later, officers found the vehicle in a ditch in the 1900 block of North Center Street. It had hit the bridge and rolled at least once. Twenty-nine-year-old Michael Grommet and 26-year-old Rachel Berrones were found outside of the vehicle.

Paramedics took Grommet and Berrones to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

During a vehicle search officers found a handgun, drugs and paraphernalia.

Grommet and Berrones were arrested after their release from the hospital. Grommet is charged with possession of a firearm as a felon and Berrones is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
