Children from all over the nation met at the White House Tuesday to put on a talent show.

The first lady and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities held the first-ever event featuring performances by major artists and students.

All the students attend schools participating in the Turnaround Arts program, which helps low-performing schools to increase student achievement through arts education.

Finley Elementary School in Des Moines is part of the program. Four students and two teachers went to Washington D.C. to participate in today’s musical finale.

One of the Des Moines students is encouraging other kids to try singing.

“If you haven’t tried it before you should because there’s a lot of other kids and people out there who sing and like to hear other people sing,” student, Brianna Shelton said. “Especially when someone else is feeling sad you can sing one of their favorite songs to them and they feel better again.”

Shelton says surprisingly she thought the White House was smaller than she expected.
