Drivers on the south side of Des Moines can expect extra traffic along Fleur Drive this week because the Principal Charity Classic tees off this Friday.
It’s year number 14 of the Champions Tour event in the metro.
The defending champ is Russ Cochran. He held off Jay Don Blake by one stroke to win last year. The tournament is at Wakonda Club, a course that Cochran says he likes.
“Everyone on tour wants more golf courses like Wakonda. They want courses…you know…that are a little more old school with great history and difficult sets of greens,” says Cochran.
The tourney starts Friday morning and runs through Sunday.
In the past seven years, the event has donated $5 million to children’s charities in central Iowa.
