The preliminary round for the Scripps National Spelling Bee is Wednesday and some Iowans will be on stage.

Two-hundred and eight-one contestants are going for the top prize in this year’s national spelling bee. A winner will be crowned Thursday.

Eleven-year-old Zander Reed of Ames is hoping to be crowned champ. This is his second trip to the bee.

Thirteen-year-old Sibani Ram of Dubuque will also be on stage. She has her superstitions. She always eats a banana and drinks a glass of milk before each competition and she wears the same sweatshirt, jeans, and boots.

Sophie Bergman attends Morning Star Academy in Bettendorf. This is her third time competing.

“It’s really cool everyone’s friends…it’s all competition against the dictionary and not competition against each other,” says Bergman.
