Governor Branstad has signed a historic piece of legislation that legalizes the use of cannabis oil.
It takes affect July 1st.
A group of Iowa mothers were behind the push to legalize cannabis oil. They wanted the medicine to treat epilepsy and the multiple seizures it causes in their children.
Under the law parents will first need a recommendation from a neurologist in order to get the cannabis oil. It will only be prescribed in cases where anti-seizure medications have failed to work.
Patients will also need a recommendation from a neurologist in order to get a permit to buy the cannabis oil.
The governor has spent the past two weeks reviewing the legislation.
“I think we were very concerned about unexpected cons. But I think the very limited law we passed is designed to help people with epilepsy and this gives them some hope,” the governor said.
The bill now goes to a rules committee and the Department of Health.
