A Newton doctor has been sentenced after pleading guilty to one count of health care fraud and one count of illegally dispensing a controlled substance resulting in death.
Layfayette Twyner prescribed hydrocodone to a patient he knew was addicted to the pain killer. That patient ended up overdosing.
Twyner originally faced more than a hundred counts of health care fraud and illegally dispensing narcotics, which could have resulted in a life sentence. But he took a plea deal and will spend five years in federal prison.
