DES MOINES, Iowa – A familiar face is helping find a cure for America’s number one killer, heart disease.
Iowa State head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg spent Friday morning visiting the top five largest fundraising teams for the Central Iowa Heart Walk.
Over 90 local companies have been competing to get a visit from Hoiberg.
The ISU coach was personally impacted by heart disease in 2005. He now lives with a pacemaker.
“Every time my heart beats it’s because of my pacemaker. I can live a normal and active lifestyle with events like these and the great support we get from teams so we can fight this disease,” the 41-year-old said.
Hoiberg and girls state basketball coach Bill Fennelly are co-chairs of the American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk. It kicks off from the Iowa State Capitol next Saturday at 9 a.m.
Walkers can choose between a one or three mile route.
The organization hopes to raise half a million dollars.
