AMES, Iowa – Crews in Ames found a long piece of history this week.
Officials are working on Knapp Street between Welch and Stanton Avenue.
During the construction they found a small strip of railroad underneath the asphalt on Wednesday.
Crews halted construction and contacted the Ames Historical Society. They found that the rail is part of the electric loop that used to go around Iowa State University’s campus between 1910 and 1920.
“It wasn’t on any of our maps,” construction supervisor Justin Clausen told the Ames Tribune. “Our information said it was removed in the 1960s.”
Crews welded off a piece of the rail for the society.
Construction resumed on Tuesday.
