Easily the most talked about topic at the World Pork Expo last week in Des Moines was Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv), and the effect it will likely have on production.

As millions of piglets succumb to the disease, the pork supply dwindles, and it's likely pork prices will increase this summer before they come back down.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced just over $26 million of funding to be poured into research against PEDv, which currently has no cure.

Just under $4 million of that amount will be headed toward a vaccine through USDA's Ag Research Service. $11.1 million will contribute to cost-share funding for producers whose herds have been infected, in order to support biosecurity protocols.
