JASPER COUNTY, Iowa –Traffic on westbound I-80 near Colfax is moving again following an accident at an overpass bridge in Jasper County Wednesday morning.
Westbound traffic was shut down for a few hours at Exit 155 after a contractor’s dump truck struck the bridge, detouring traffic. DOT officials say the contractor was working on putting down asphalt on the shoulder of I-80 and after dumping a load of asphalt forgot to put the back of the truck down. It wedged against the bridge when the truck went underneath, causing extensive damage to a beam of the bridge.
An official says it could cost $75,000 to $100,000 to fix the beam. A temporary fix is being used, and the permanent fix is expected to be done in the coming weeks.
Inspectors examined the bridge and have deemed it safe for traffic to cross under, but the bridge has been closed to traffic.
The left lane of traffic was reopened around 8:35 a.m. and traffic remains slow in the area.
