JASPER COUNTY, Iowa — A single-car crash near Newton sent five teenagers to the hospital Wednesday night.

It happened around 5:45 in the 5000 block of East 76th Street South.

Officials say the driver, 16-year-old Janessa Oldenburger of Newton, lost control on the gravel and went into a steep ditch.

An air ambulance responded but due to mechanical problems it was unable to leave. Ground ambulances took all the teens, whose ages range from 14 to 17, to area hospitals.

The extent of the teens’ injuries is unknown.
