Inspectors: Apartment Building May Still Be Closed

Des Moines, Iowa – The owner of a dangerous Sherman Hill apartment building is making some repairs, but it may be too late.

The city is ordering all residents of the Navarre building on 15th Street to move out by the end of the month. Inspectors say the building is just too dangerous. Monday morning, city inspectors met with attorneys for owner Kirk Blunck. According to the city, Blunck is making some improvements, but major repairs, like asbestos removal and roof and window repairs, probably won’t happen before residents are forced to move out. City inspectors say Blunck ignored repeated warnings, now there can’t be much flexibility.

“The time has long since passed where we have more flexibility,” said Community Development Director Phil Delafield. “Now we’re at the end of the deadlines. This is really the last opportunity that the courts grant us to make sure the building’s safe.”

Blunck, a well known Des Moines archetect, has not returned our repeated calls for comment.
