CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – State Senator Jack Hatch, a Des Moines Democrat and nominee for governor, has chosen Cedar Rapids City Councilwoman Monica Vernon as his lieutenant governor running mate. Hatch scheduled a news conference in Cedar Rapids Tuesday morning to officially make the announcement.

The Hatch Campaign website announced Monica Vernon as its lieutenant governor candidate Tuesday morning.

But Hatch’s campaign website already broke the news earlier in the morning.

The campaign later took down the picture, which may have been posted prematurely.

Vernon finished second in the 1st District Congressional primary and used to be a registered Republican.

Vernon founded the Vernon Research Group. Vernon had become many insiders’ top guess as a choice. She provides Hatch  some increased campaign recognition in eastern Iowa, where Hatch isn’t very well-known. And her ties to the business community could help Hatch raise money, where he is getting dwarfed by the fundraising operation of Republican Governor Terry Branstad.

Recent campaign finance reports showed Branstad with $4.5 million in the campaign bank account, while Hatch had only about $300,000.
