INDIANOLA, Iowa — The Indianola Police Department has applied for 26 rifles that once belonged to the military.

The 1033 Program equips local law enforcement with used military items.

Officials say the rifles can prove helpful in situations like standoffs, where officers may need to stay a longer distance from the suspect.

All 19 officers at the department would be required to go through special training before they are allowed to carry the rifles. Currently four officers have complete training and carry personal rifles.

There are 26 requested, so that each officer would be allowed his or her own rifle, with a couple rifles that are specialized.

The department expects to find out if they will receive the rifles in about a month.
