WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – A seven-year-old boy is in the hospital after he nearly drowned at a popular West Des Moines beach Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened at Blue Heron Lake at Raccoon River Park.
Witnesses say the boy was unresponsive when swimmers pulled him out of the water. They rolled him onto his side. He regained consciousness and started spitting up water.
Other witnesses called 911.
“I was on the phone with the dispatcher and I could hear the cops coming,” Shannon Huffman “They drove down to the beach area and they tried to talk to him some more and there was a cop there first and he was trying to get the kid to say his name and he wasn’t saying anything and they came down and got a stretcher and put him in the ambulance.”
The child’s name and condition are being withheld.
The beach is not staffed with any lifeguards.
