ANKENY, Iowa – Quick action by the owner of a north Ankeny home is credited with keeping fire damage from being much worse.
A lightning bolt struck the owner’s home at 416 NE 24th Court at about 3 p.m. Thursday. She was home and when she smelled smoke she called the Ankeny Fire Department.
Deputy Fire Chief Rob Chiappano said the firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack and were able to knock the flames down. The very tip of the roof on the east end, where it appears the lightening hit, was burned. Fire crews were busy shoveling insulation from the windows. All family members and pets were able to escape the fire without injury. Deputy Chief Chiappano said his department got assistance from Polk City and Altoona.
“She wasn’t sure if the house was struck, or not,” said Chippano. “When she smelled the smoke, she placed a call to the Fire Department. That gave us a head start to do what we do,” added Chiappano.
“When in doubt, call us out,” Chiappano added.
