scavo fire

DES MOINES, Iowa – Investigators beleive a lightning strike may have caused a morning fire at a local school.

The fire started after 6 a.m. Friday morning at the Scavo Alternative High School at 3725 52nd Street in Des Moines.

“Crews found some smoke coming from the structure. They initially went in and knocked the fire down quickly. It appears that it was some kind of electrical problem,” Des Moines Fire Department District Chief Matt Porter said.

Authorities say flames were coming from the boiler room and the main breaker received a lot of damage.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and there is minimal damage to the rest of the building.
