DES MOINES, Iowa – Firefighters say a maintenance worker is lucky to be alive after he was found hanging from a downtown roof.
Crews were called shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday on a report of a man dangling from the Hoover State Office Building.
Officials say the man was doing some maintenance using a boatswain’s chair suspended from the roof. He apparently failed to tie off the chair but did tie the safety line.
“When he went off the edge of the building the chair fell and he fell about 14 feet and the safety rope saved him,” Des Moines fire Captain Steve Brown said.
The department’s Technical Rope Rescue Team was called but firefighters were able to get the man down using the bucket on a ladder truck.
“He was lucky he tied into the building. That safety line saved his life,” Captain Brown added.
Authorities say a worker inside the building saw the man struggling and called 911.
The man wasn’t seriously injured.
