GRIMES, Iowa - Half a dozen fire crews responded to house fire in Grimes this morning after lightning struck a family's home.

The Arends' family say they first smelled smoke inside around 7 o'clock this morning then went outside to find flames coming from their roof. Most of the damage was done to the kitchen area and it took crews about 45 minutes to put out the fire. The family is in the process of moving out of the home and was surprised the home was a target.

“We live in an area where there are just so many trees taller than our house. Why would it hit our house? But for some reason it did,” says Will Arends.

There is no word on how much the damage will cost to repair.
