MAQUOKETA, Iowa–A man in custody who ran off from eastern Iowa authorities two different times in a week was back in custody Sunday. Brandon Bodenhofer, 32, of Baldwin, escaped twice as deputies escorted him from jail to a court appearance across the street at the Jackson County jail.

Neither time did deputies have him handcuffed. County officials plan to change their policies as a result of Bodenhofer’s escapes. They will now require inmates to be handcuffed during transit to and from the courthouse.

Bodenhofer had eluded authorities since his latest escape last month. But officials caught him after a car chase near the Jackson and Clinton County border Saturday night.

Bodenhofer has had a history of drug and theft chargesĀ over the years.
