NEWTON, Iowa – A security camera in Newton caught the moment a possible tornado formed as it traveled near Newton.

Marvin Woods sent in the footage to Channel 13 which was shot south of Interste-80 looking north.

At least 11 tornadoes were reported to have touched down across the state including the cities of Jewell, Reinbeck, Traer, and Winterset.

The National Weather Service will be going to Grundy, Tama and Jasper counties to do storm surveys Monday.

I’m confused, if it’s a security camera, why is it zooming in on the tornado.? Who’s zooming it in? And why does it look like it’s the middle of winter?

It was low light so the camera switched to infrared which washes out the colors. It’s a PTZ security camera similar to what they use for monitoring the traffic. I control it from my computer from anywhere in the world via the internet. I rotated the camera from its normal view of my driveway to look at what appeared to be a tornado forming.
