DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines City Council will put down the resumes and meet city manager candidates for the first time face to face Tuesday.
The four candidates are Stephen Arbo, Stanley Early, Jane Shang, and Sean Stegall. One of these four candidates will replace Rick Clark. Clark served as city manager of Des Moines for seven years. Unlike Clark, who spent 40 years working for the city of Des Moines, none of the four candidates have any experience working for Des Moines.
Arbo has nearly 30 years of experience in government and currently is the city manager for Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
Early has spent 35 years in the public sector. He is the deputy city manager in Dayton, Ohio.
Jane Shang has 25 years of experience and has spent the last five years working as the deputy city manager in El Paso, Texas. El Paso is the largest city of all four finalists with a population of 700,000.
The least experienced candidate is Sean Stegall with less than 20 years in local government. He’s also making the most money. According to the Des Moines Register, Stegall has a salary of $187,560 as city manager in Elgin, Illinios.
The candidates will be in Des Moines Tuesday and Wednesday for interviews and a tour of the city. Council members will discuss the candidates tomorrow during a closed meeting. You can meet them during a public reception at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates Tuesday at 6 p.m.
