ANKENY, Iowa -- A special wiffle ball game took place tonight all in the name of charity.
Employees from the North Ankeny Hy-Vee and local Ankeny athletes and leaders came together to help The Miracle League of Ankeny.
“The program is wonderful and to have all these people show up just to raise money for all of these children it`s an amazing, amazing thing,” says Vivianne Kaberna of Ankeny.
Kaberna's two grandsons have participated in games on specially designed field since it opened.
“I was so emotional their first game because they hit the ball and they ran and they jumped up and down. When they got to the bases they heard their names announced, they stop in midair and wave to the crowds, it`s amazing,” says Kaberna.
With the field complete, Ankeny leaders turned their attention to an all-inclusive playground, including ramps, special swings and a sensory wall.
However, the project still needs thousands of dollars to be complete.
“We always like to find a charity we can donate money and this is one we`ve already donated money to. We thought we could have some fun with it by having a wiffle ball game against local celebrities around Ankeny,” says Hy-Vee manager Scott Pearson.
Pearson came up with the idea to help and faced off against local celebrities like Ankeny’s mayor and local athletes.
Free will donations as well as all the food sales will go to complete the playground, and Kaberna can’t wait to take her family.
“That so many people would want to turn out for this it`s just amazing,” says Kaberna.
So far 1.2 Million dollars has been raised.$200,000 is still needed to complete the playground.
