ADEL, Iowa — The sweet corn stands are starting to pop-up across central Iowa.
Thursday was opening day for the Sweet Corn Shack on the east side of Highway 169 just south of the bike trail.
The Deardorff crew brought out 280 dozen to start the day around 9:30 a.m. Just a couple of hours later they’d already sold 80 dozen. It was non-stop business, which is what’s expected for the first week.
Owners say they’ve been getting calls and Facebook questions for weeks asking when the corn would be ready.
“This is huge in Iowa. It’s what people live and breathe for. We ship corn all over the United States. Last year shipping to Georgia, Alaska, Arizona a ton,” says Chrissy Deardorff.
The Adel Sweet Corn Festival is set for August 8th and 9th. There will be more than seven tons of free sweet corn for visitors.
