DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Hampton and Residence in downtown Des Moines are hosting a grand opening Thursday afternoon. The hotels will provide more than 250 rooms for visitors, but city officials say what’s most exciting is what this means for downtown Des Moines.

“Downtown is really a vibrant area, lots of people work here and there’s lots of demand for hotels. So that’s where you’re seeing the growth,” said Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau president Greg Edwards.

Edwards says demand for hotels is a good sign for visitors and residents of Des Moines, because it means the city is thriving. The owners, Hawkeye Hotels span across 11 states with 12 hotels in Iowa. This is the company’s first time in Des Moines, but it likely won’t be the last. “We’ve got two more hotels planned for downtown Des Moines. We can’t disclose yet where those will be, and then we’ve got probably a handful of hotels that will probably be developing in the Des Moines metro area as well.”

Downtown Des Moines has four additional hotel proposals.

The grand opening includes free food, drinks, and live music in the hotels’ courtyard. The hotels are on the 100th block of Water Street along the Des Moines River. The event starts Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
