DES MOINES, Iowa --The Iowa State Fair is less than a month away. You’ll find one healthy new food option along with a new place to take your picture this year.

We are used to corndogs, turkey legs and many other fried foods on a stick at the fair, but there'll be a new healthier option at the Salad Bowl available. "This is probably the least amount of calories," Connie Boesen said.

It’s a caprese salad on a stick. The tomato, mozzarella cheese and basil with balsamic vinaigrette on a stick will sell for $3. She's one of five finalists selling new foods at that price.

Other new foods competing for the title of best food are a brownie blitz made with brownie cheesecake bites, the brisket and bacon mac-n-chesse, the three buck bowl, made with potato skins, scrambled eggs, salsa and cheese and funnel cake sticks.

You’ll be able to vote for your favorite. "We'll have our fairgoers see if they agree with these judges," Gary Slater with the state fair said.

statueA new attraction will grab your attention at the fair. You'll find the “God Bless America” sculpture standing 25 feet tall. The characters are replicas of the iconic figures depicted in Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” painting. Slater said, "It will be here through the 1st of September, so all during the fair. We put it right at the base of Pella Plaza at Rock Island Avenue."

The Iowa State Fair runs August 7-17. You can save $5 off the $11 admission price on opening day from 5 a.m. to noon. You'll just need to clip the coupon from the August, 3rd Des Moines Register.
