HOUSTON, Texas - A team of Iowans is in Texas for an event that happens every two years, but these games are about more than the competition. The Transplant Games of America takes place in Houston, Texas July 11th through 15th.
Chloe Buck is a member of Team Iowa. She is eight and an organ recipient. Mom Beth Buck says, "She was extremely sick, so jaundiced she was green when we took her to the emergency room."
Just two months into her young life, doctors told Chloe's parents she needed a liver transplant. The infant was moved to the top of the waiting list and soon got one from a 5-year-old. Buck says, "We're thankful all the time for her second chance at life, and we really truly think it's a miracle."
About 25 people will compete for Team Iowa, including family members of organ donors and organ recipients. The event also aims to raise awareness about people signing up to be an organ donor. Buck says, "We would just like to share our story and that there's hope for other people that are waiting on these lists."
