Council’s Pick for City Manager Withdraws, Search Continues

DES MOINES, Iowa — It looks as if the search for Des Moines’ next city manager will have to begin again.

Four finalists interviewed in Des Moines last week, getting to know residents and touring the city. The city council had been prepared to offer the job to one of the candidates, but before an employment package could be negotiated and considered by the council the candidate withdrew his application.

The city council did not release the name of the candidate it wanted to offer the position to, but a statement posted on the City of Elgin’s website said its city manager Sean Stegall had withdrawn his application for Des Moines’ city manager position.

In the statement Stegall said, “I am looking forward to continuing my work in Elgin to continue to build a world class municipal organization, strong neighborhoods and a vibrant local economy.”

The three other finalists were Steve Arbo, Stanley Earley, and Jane Shang. They are not being considered to fill the position, which was left open when Rick Clark retired.

Larry Hulse will continue serving as interim city manager until the position is filled.
