sgt howardDES MOINES, Iowa – Governor Branstad has ordered flags to be flown half-staff across the state over the weekend in honor of a fallen World War II soldier.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Howard went missing during a bombing raid over Germany in 1945 when his plane got shot down. One crew member was taken prisoner, five others, including Howard, weren’t found until 2012.

A tip from German officials led US officials to determine through DNA testing the then 21-year-old’s remains were in a burial plot close to the crash site.

Flags will be lowered from 5 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Monday for the Moravia native.

A memorial service will be held at Sunset View Cemetery in Moulton on Saturday at 11 a.m. with full military honors.
