DES MOINES, Iowa – The identity of the jogger hit by a car in Des Moines has been released.

Witnesses say Kelsey Johnson, 22, stepped into the path of a car at 31st and Kingman. They say she hit the windshield and fell to the ground.

Paramedics rushed her to the hospital but police say she’s expected to recover. They’re investigating who was at fault.

“The signal may have been changing,” Sgt. Jason Halifax said. “I don’t know exactly where it was at during that changing process. A pedestrian has to wait before stepping out onto the travel portion of the road so hopefully traffic investigation can determine that.”

Police say Johnson is from Illinois and is working at Drake University this summer.

The driver of the car is Des Moines resident Merima Jusufovic, 19. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police say Jusufovic has a permit only and not a valid driver’s license.
