DES MOINES, Iowa – Des Moines firefighters say a teen helped save his family from a fire on the city’s southeast side Tuesday morning.
Firefighters got the call to the mobile home park on Southeast 14th and East Virginia Avenue just after 7 a.m.
Kenny Christian, 13, alerted his mother Shawna Frakes and two brothers aged four and seven of smoke and they were able to get out.
“He did a pretty good job,” Shawna said. “I’m very proud of my son because if it wasn’t for him being able to smell that, I don’t know. I’m a pretty deep sleeper myself.”
Officials say the mobile home didn’t have a working fire alarm.
The trailer was a total loss by the time firefighters showed up. Surrounding trailers suffered slight heat damage.
Nobody was injured.
Investigators were looking for a cause of the fire Tuesday morning.
